The Great Backyard Bird Count began today (and goes through Monday). We have decided to count birds in our backyard for one half hour on each day.
Today, while the weather was less than ideal – overcast, light rain, absolutely gloomy, birds were still active. We did not see anything beyond some of our usual visitors.
Here’s Patrick hanging out by our sliding doors, where we observed from:
Looking at Dark-eyed Junco:
Confirming a Song Sparrow:
Paper for marking our observations, a pen, our little Oregon bird book (National Geographic Field Guide to Birds: Washington/Oregon), and a bird chart (this was a handout in an issue of Audubon; I took it out and had it laminated):
What we saw/heard:
American Crow – 2
Black-capped Chickadee – 5
Song Sparrow – 7
Dark-eyed Junco (Oregon) – 12
After we counted for the half hour, we uploaded our data to the GBBC website:
I wonder what we’ll see tomorrow…

Nice to know that you are taking part in this.
Thanks, Cheryl!
