BOOK: Grant’s Getaways: 101 Oregon Adventures

Before moving to Portland three years ago, one way I got familiar with the new state where I’d be living was by watching videos of Grant’s Getaways on the Travel Oregon website (they are also aired on KGW NewsChannel 8). Grant McOmie is the host, and, like Huell Howser is was to California (sadly, Howser passed away in January of this year from cancer), Grant is considered a state treasure. Here are a few of his recent places to visit:

And back in December, you may remember, McOmie did a segment on Tryon Creek State Park that featured myself and my kids:

McOmie has compiled 101 of the best getaways into a new book, appropriately titled, Grant’s Getaways: 101 Oregon Adventures (Portland, OR: Westwinds Press, 2013).

McOmie’s main purpose is to encourage people who live in Oregon to get outside and explore their own state. There is so much diversity in landscape and recreational opportunity that anyone is bound to find an adventure to try from this book. It is organized by month, starting in January, with 8 or 9 adventures per month. Each entry, which corresponds to an individual Grant’s Getaways segment, not only describes the adventure, but comes with McOmie’s broad knowledge of state history, culture, and natural history. In addition, more information is provided about the place (contact information, websites, etc., and a link for watching that Grant’s Getaways segment online). There’s an Oregon map at the front of the book, with all the adventure locations shown, which is helpful.

For the entries that I have read so far, at times I’ve felt that I wanted to read more, but with 101 entries, each can only be so long. It would have been nice to have some color photographs in the book, or at least better quality black and white images than are given. Those quibbles aside, McOmie’s passion for his home state and his eagerness to share it is where this book shines. In our three years in Portland, we’ve visited some of the places McOmie describes, but there’s a whole lot more, and we have no plans to leave the state. I look forward to using Grant’s Getaways with my family on future adventures!

McOmie will be doing some book talks in the Portland area:

June 11, 7:00pm, Audubon Society of Portland (more info)
June 25, 7:00pm, Tigard Public Library (more info)
