Family Friendly Tualatin River Discovery Day
24th Annual Tualatin River Discovery Day is June 29

TUALATIN, OR — On Saturday June 29, Tualatin Riverkeepers will host the 24th Annual Tualatin River Discover Day, a family friendly paddle trip on the Tualatin River from the 99W Boat Launch on Hazelbrook Road in Tualatin to Tualatin Community Park. The Riverkeepers expect more than 200 people to participate in this year’s event.

“We encourage families with small children to experience one of the greatest natural wonders in our community.” said Monica Smiley, Executive Director of Tualatin Riverkeepers. “We want everybody to have a positive first experience on the river so we’ve done everything we can to make this event easy, fun, safe and comfortable.”

The Riverkeepers will rent canoes and tandem or solo kayaks to participants ($30 per boat) and provide all of the necessary paddles, life jackets and safety gear. Paddlers with their own boats are invited to participate at no cost, but reservations are required. Volunteers will carry boats to and from the river and a free shuttle van will carry participants from the take-out at Tualatin Community Park back to their cars. Riverkeepers trip leaders will be on the river all day to assist inexperienced paddlers and provide an extra level of safety.

A river fair at the end of the trip at Tualatin Community Park will have fun nature activities for the entire family. To appeal to families, the Riverkeepers made this trip a little shorter than their usual paddle trip, but a side trip down to the Brown’s Ferry Park and back is available for those who want to paddle farther.

The City of Tualatin will celebrate its 100th anniversary throughout 2013. All year long there will be programs, activities, and other recognition of this community special milestone. The Discovery Day event guidebook, Tualatin Tales, will highlight historical happenings on the river over the past 100 years.

Tualatin River Discovery Day is sponsored by NW Natural, the Tualatin Basin Partners for Clean Water, Portland General Electric, Next Adventure and Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe, with support from Columbia Slough Watershed Council and Willamette Riverkeeper.
