Monday thought of the week: in play

A thought:

In play, children make their own decisions and solve their own problems. In adult-directed settings, children are weak and vulnerable. In play, they are strong and powerful. The play world is the child’s practice world for being an adult.

– Peter Gray, author of Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life, quoted in Margaret Wente, “The kids don’t play any more,” The Globe and Mail (November 16, 2013)
