BOOK: Fiddleheads to Fir Trees: Leaves in All Seasons

Fiddleheads to Fir Trees: Leaves in all Seasons, by Joanne Linden and illustrated by Lauri Caple (Missoula, MT: Mountain Press, 2013, 32 pages), is an inviting introduction to the role that leaves play in plants’ lives throughout the year. Through poetry and informational text, children will learn about ferns, weeds, willows, water lilies, carnivorous plants, and a variety of other plants and many of the animals who depend on them (a checklist at the book of the book lists all the animal species shown in the illustrations). This book is not Pacific Northwest specific, but I’m positive anyone in the area with an interest in natural history would enjoy it, especially the colorful and friendly illustrations, as seen in this page featuring two rabbits among a group of baby ferns, or “fiddleheads.”
