William Sullivan‘s Oregon hiking guides are among the most popular in the region. The guide for Portland and nearby hikes went into its fourth edition in 2014.
William L. Sullivan, 100 Hikes in Northwest Oregon & Southwest Washington (Eugene, OR: Navillus Press, 2014), 260pp.
The guide covers 100 hikes in Portland and Vancouver, the Columbia River Gorge, around Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens, and more. Every hike is within a two-hour drive from the Portland metro area. With hand-drawn maps, loads of black & white photos and a few color photos, and recommendations for campgrounds and places to stay, it’s a charming guide book. Sullivan also includes a list of which hikes in the book are good for people with limited physical disabilities, and a list of 103 more hikes in the area for more adventurous hikers.
Sullivan has also written hiking guides for the rest of the state: 100 Hikes/Travel Guide: Oregon Coast & Coast Range(2009), 100 Hikes in the Central Oregon Cascades (2012), 100 Hikes in Southern Oregon (2010), Trails of Crater Lake National Park & Oregon Caves National Monument (2010), and 100 Hikes/Travel Guide: Eastern Oregon (2008).
