I like to know more about hiking for me and my son never been hiking before we need help my son is 10 I’m 48
Hi Michael –
Getting outside with your kid is a great activity! Is he excited about it himself?
You’ll want to put together a backpack with items that you should have with you when hiking. The American Hiking Society has lots of resources to this effect: http://www.americanhiking.org/gear-resources/tips-for-your-next-hike/
You’ll also want to get a hiking book or two. We love Wild in the City: Exploring the Intertwine: The Portland-Vancouver Region’s Network of Parks, Trails, and Natural Areas and 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Portland: Including the Coast, Mount Hood, St. Helens, and the Santiam River. This is also a useful website: http://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide/Main_Page
Are you guys looking to hike in or real close to the city, or farther out?
